Paul Sabourin

Portfolio Manager

Paul graduated from the University of Toronto in 1975 with a B.A., and the University of Western Ontario in 1980 with an MBA. He joined Burns Fry Ltd. in 1982 as a research analyst focusing on small cap stocks. In 1983, he moved to the institutional trading area and worked in a number of areas including preferred shares, convertible bonds, risk arbitrage and liability trading. In 1987, Paul became a director of Burns Fry, and later became a member of the Executive Committee, responsible for managing the institutional trading area.

In 1991, Paul was a founding partner of Polar Securities Inc. Since that time he has variously managed the convertible arbitrage, merger arbitrage, and equity special situations portfolios. Paul has been the Chief Investment Officer since 1991 and was Chief Executive Officer up until January 2006.



Bob Poile

Analyst

Bob graduated from Harvard University in 1981 with a B.A. He joined Chase Manhattan Bank in 1981 as a credit analyst before moving to corporate lending and investment banking. In 1986, he joined Burns Fry Ltd. in the institutional trading area focusing on preferred shares and convertible bonds. In 1991, Bob joined Paloma Partners as Portfolio Manager – Canadian Investments, remaining with Paloma until 1998.

In 1998, Bob returned to Canada and established, with Bill Anderson, Trident Advisors, a distressed asset and private equity investor. In that role, Bob has acted as Chairman, Director or officer of various entities including Dylex Limited, Repap Enterprises Inc., Spar Aerospace, Call-Net Enterprises Inc., and Clublink Corporation. In 2004, he became President and CEO of Clublink, resigning upon sale of the investment in 2007.



 
Tim Trapp

Analyst

Tim graduated from Simon Fraser University in 1996 with a double major in Business Administration and Economics and Harvard University in 2002 with an MBA. Prior to joining Polar in 2009, he was a portfolio manager for five years at Stark Investments trading various arbitrage strategies in North America, including convertible arbitrage, volatility (options and warrants), risk arbitrage, event driven equity long/short and private placements. Prior to Stark, Tim spent three years with Merrill Lynch as an Associate in investment banking. Prior to Harvard, he spent five years as a partner and co-founder of Mondiale Asset Management, a Vancouver based hedge fund manager that deploys quantitative models on various derivative markets. Tim joined Polar in April 2009.



John Paul Cahill

Analyst

John Paul graduated from McMaster University in 1994 with a degree in Political Theory. Upon graduation, he became a registered independent futures trader on the Toronto Futures Exchange. In 1996, he became a competitive options trader, making markets in Canadian equity options, and served as an Exchange Floor Governor. Upon the closing of the Toronto Stock Exchange option floor in 2000, John Paul joined Polar Securities as a trader, focusing on derivative arbitrage strategies. He now concentrates his efforts to source returns for the structured products portfolio within the North Pole multi-strategy fund.


Kamran Siddiqui, CFA

Analyst

Kamran graduated with a BSc. in Computer Science and an MBA from York University (1989). He started at Wood Gundy Inc. in the Information Technology area before moving into the newly-formed Equity Derivatives group, where he was responsible for model-building, structuring and trading the OTC derivatives book. In 1993, he secured a position in New York with Chase Manhattan Bank, trading and structuring OTC Equity Derivatives products. In 1995, he joined Connor Clark & Lunn in Vancouver as the head of Information Systems. He returned to Toronto in 1997 and re-joined CIBC as a Proprietary Trader specializing in electronic trading and arbitrage strategies. Kamran joined Polar in 2000, and has concentrated on arbitrage strategies, derivatives and structured products. Having earned his CFA designation in 1994, Kamran is a past member of the Toronto CFA Society Board of Directors and continues to volunteer his time to this organization.


Kambiz Kazemi, CFA

Analyst

Kambiz graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Electricite et de Mecanique in Nancy, France. Following an engineering-oriented career, which included a period at Schlumberger in Western Canada, he completed his MBA at McGill University (2001). He worked in the investment banking area and within the strategic analysis group at two Canadian dealers. In 2003, he joined Fimat (a Societe Generale business) and later became Senior Vice President - Alpha Strategies. In this position, Kambiz was responsible for leading the development of a range of value added products including derivative-based trading strategies. He now directs volatility arbitrage strategies for North Pole.


Bill Anderson, CA

Analyst

Bill received a B. Comm. (Hons) from McMaster University in 1971. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1973 and became a tax partner of MacGillivray & Co., Chartered Accountants in 1976. In 1980, Bill became Vice-President, Finance of a predecessor of Inverness Petroleum Ltd. From 1984 to 1993, Bill served as President and Chief Executive Officer. He became Chairman in in 1988, serving in that capacity until the sale of Inverness in 1996. He was Chairman of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers from 1991 to 1992.

From 1993 to 1996, Bill was Managing Director of Paloma Partners Management Company in Greenwich, Connecticut. Paloma manages domestic and offshore hedge funds. From 1996 to 1998, Bill was President of Silverton Fund Management, the manager of Paloma's offshore hedge funds. In that role, Bill was registered with NASD and CFTC.

In 1998, Bill returned to Canada and established, with Bob Poile, Trident Advisors a distressed asset and private equity investor. In that role, Bill has been Chairman, Director or officer of various entities, including Dylex Limited, and Repap Enterprises Inc. Since 1999 he has been Chairman of Caxton International Limited and related funds, which has $8 billion of investments in multiple hedge fund strategies.



 
Ravi Bhat

Analyst

Ravi holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Physics from Queens University (1996) and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Toronto (2005). Prior to joining Polar Securities, he worked at Columbia University as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. He started at Polar Securities in 2009 as a Risk Manager, and in 2010 he joined the portfolio team working on quantitative strategies.



Nick Chen, CFA

Trader

Nick graduated from the University of Toronto in 2000 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He joined AIM Trimark Investments Inc. in 2000 as an accounting operations analyst. By 2002, he was responsible for creating proprietary solutions for the Finance and Investment departments at AIM Trimark. Nick joined Polar in 2003 to take on marketing responsibilities and to aid in the continual development of Polar's infrastructure. In 2006, he joined the North Pole team as a trader. Nick earned the CFA designation in 2006. Additionally, from 2006 to 2011 he served on the Toronto CFA Society's Member Communications Committee.
